Talk summary

AI is everywhere, bringing conversational interfaces with it

Big tech is spending a fortune to educate the mass market on how to engage with conversational interfaces. Leaving behind all that we have learned about traditional Graphical UI.

Why do we expect users to know their own needs?

Conversational interfaces put all of the agency on the user, asking them to think what they want whilst failing to show them what’s possible.

Should we be expecting users to articulate their own needs to use our product?

An empty prompt field under the words How can I help?, with a text cursor blinking in it and nothing else on offer.

UX Camp Brighton

UX Camp Brighton is an “unconference” for people interested in all areas of user experience, from interaction design to information architecture, user research to UX writing, and everything in between. It is a non-profit event run by volunteers.

UX Camp Brighton in progress: four people stand in front of a projected session grid, one speaking into a microphone, with the audience seated on red chairs in the foreground of a plant-filled cafe space.

My takeaways

How could you build better AI tools, that support and guide users?

The question isn’t whether to use AI. It’s whether conversation is the right interface for the job.

The best AI products don’t ask users to articulate everything, they show what’s possible and let users refine from there.
